How is the yellow color formed?

Natural yellow quartz (often referred to as citrine) gets its color from traces of iron in its structure. However, Lemon Quartz is usually not naturally lemon-yellow. Its vibrant yellow-green hue is most often achieved through a combination of heat treatment and irradiation applied to amethyst, citrine, or smoky quartz.

• Heat treatment changes the oxidation state of iron within the quartz.

• Irradiation (exposure to gamma rays or other forms of radiation) alters the crystal’s internal structure just enough to enhance or shift its color.

These treatments are stable and safe, and they give Lemon Quartz its signature clear, bright, lemony hue—often with a slight green or golden undertone.
