It was named for its unmistakable coloring—a vivid pink center surrounded by deep, lush green in a pattern reminiscent of the fruit it was named after. As the pink tourmaline in the center was forming, it became exposed to trace minerals such as manganese and lithium, causing it to change color to green over time, resulting in this unique layering. The Minas Gerais region of Brazil is famous for its high-quality watermelon tourmaline specimens, often considered some of the most beautiful examples of this stone in the world.
