Amethyst is a type of quartz that is found in many regions of the world, famous for its shades of purple. The purple hues of this gem are due to manganese, while the depth of the color is influenced by the amount of iron present in its matrix.

Also known as the stone of sobriety, Amethyst was used in the past to abate the effects of drunkenness. The name itself originates from the Greek word amethystos, which means “without wine” or “not intoxicating.”

A Greek legend about Bacchus, the god of wine, tells about a pretty girl named Amethyst who was on her way to worship at the temple of Diana. Bacchus threatened Amethyst with his tiger when he encountered her in the forest. She prayed to Diana to protect her and was transformed into a clear crystal quartz so she could not be torn apart by the tiger. Feeling regret over his actions, Bacchus then anointed Amethyst with his sacred wine but was unable to pour enough and cover her entirely. This explains why Amethyst is purple and that there can sometimes be some unevenness. It also relates to the healing properties of this stone that help with sobriety.
